Creating and Funding Great Playgrounds and Playspaces
Local Government Community Health and Well Being Project
Local Government plays a key role in providing for the health and wellbeing of Tasmanian communities. LGAT works to improve awareness and understanding that role by:
- Advocating regarding the essential role councils play in improving Tasmanian’s health outcomes
- Promoting understanding about the best ways to support that essential role
Creating and Funding Great Playgrounds and Playspaces
LGAT’s Creating and Funding Great Playgrounds and Playspaces forums bought together representatives of 20 councils, including officers from a wide range of professions, elected representatives as well as several state government officers and community organisation workers.
A key theme that emerged from the sessions was the importance of playgrounds and playspaces for promoting enjoyable physical activity for children and families and the long-term health and wellbeing benefits this brings. There was also a focus on consulting with children and community members in the development of parks, the importance of ensuring playgrounds are inclusive for children of all abilities, the value of master-planning to ensure parks are well located and connected with other community assets and the benefits of ensuring council maintenance staff are involved in the planning and development of new parks.
Short films about eight innovative council projects were created for the forum and can be viewed below. The forums were sponsored by Kompan.
