About

The Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT) is the peak body for Tasmania's 29 councils.

We advocate, so their voices are heard at all levels of government.

We provide procurement, research and policy development services and advice, promote high governance standards through professional development for council staff and elected representatives, and share information about Tasmanian councils with the community.

Our core purpose is to:

  • Protect and represent the interests and rights of councils in Tasmania.
  • Promote an efficient and effective system of local government in Tasmania.
  • Provide services to members, councillors and employees of councils.

Our vision is to build stronger councils.

Our mission is to provide leadership, support, representation and advocacy on behalf of Tasmanian councils.

We live by our values, which are effective, supportive, rewarding, acting with integrity and adaptive.

LGAT has been the peak body for local government in Tasmania for over 100 years (founded in 1911) and is part of a national network of associations. We are funded by councils and other income earned through projects sponsored on behalf of local government, and a range of services and sponsorships.

We are an incorporated body under the Local Government Act 1993.
