Policy and advocacy

LGAT acts on behalf of Tasmanian councils and communities

As the peak body for Tasmania's local councils, we advocate to protect the rights and interests of councils and to improve our communities.

Our respected relationships with key stakeholders, including state and federal governments, enable us to act on the issues that matter to Tasmanian councils and communities.

We speak with councils regularly to ensure we understand the most essential policy issues they'd like us to focus on. On behalf of our members, we:

  • Provide a voice for councils on state and federal issues
  • Raise the profile of issues important to councils and their communities
  • Identify solutions that help local communities and secure essential funding from state and federal governments
  • Share information and experience about what works
  • Conduct timely research and provides advice to enable councils to make informed decisions
  • Educate the community about the role and importance of councils.
