Tasmania is made up of 29 municipalities or local government areas (LGAs).
Each municipality is represented by a council that includes councillors, a deputy mayor and a mayor - all elected by their local community.
Elections are held every four years to decide who sits on the council.
Councils shape the places in which we live and their decisions impact our neighbourhoods and communities.
