Enrol

To nominate and vote in the local government elections, you must first enrol with the Tasmanian Electoral Commission (TEC).

If you are enrolled to vote on the State or Federal Electoral Roll, you are already enrolled for local government elections.

The Electoral Roll will close at 6:00pm on 10 September 2026.

To find out if you're enrolled to vote, you can check your enrolment details here or head to the Tasmanian Electoral Commission website.

You are eligible to enrol for Tasmanian local government elections if:

  • You are 16 or 17 years of age* or older.
  • You are an Australian citizen.
  • You have lived at your present address for at least the last month.

You are also eligible to vote in local government elections under some special provisions if:

  • You are a resident in a municipality, but not eligible for the State electoral roll (for example,
because you are not an Australian Citizen), or
  • You own or occupy land in a municipal area different from where you are enrolled on the state electoral roll, or
  • You are the nominated representative of a body corporate which owns or occupies land in the municipal area.

Then you can apply to be on the General Manager's Roll. Please contact your local council to find out more.

The exception is prisoners serving a sentence of imprisonment for more than three years.

British subjects who are not Australian citizens are eligible to enrol for Tasmanian elections if they were on a Commonwealth of Australia electoral roll on 25 January 1984.

*You may enrol when you are 16 or 17, but you cannot vote until you're 18.
