Southern Tasmania’s first Recycle Rewards Depot officially opened in Goodwood in July, marking a major milestone in the state’s container refund scheme. Operated by local social enterprise SEED, the high-capacity facility can process over 100 drink containers per minute and offers a drive-through, undercover service for bulk returns.

The launch was attended by Glenorchy City Council mayor Sue Hickey, along with other members of the community and representatives from TasRecycle, Tomra Cleanaway, Nexus and SEED. They were able to witness a live demonstration of the depot’s advanced processing systems.

SEED’s involvement brings added social value to the initiative. As a not-for-profit enterprise, SEED provides meaningful employment and training for Tasmanians with disability. In addition to operating the depot, SEED runs a Container Collection Service for businesses, schools, and community groups. Participants receive 240L bins, regular collection and cleaning, and full processing of containers. Refunds are split, with 5 cents per container going to the participant and 5 cents supporting SEED’s mission.

Located at the end of Hornby Road, Goodwood, the depot is open weekdays from 9:00am to 4:00pm and Saturdays from 8:00am to 12:00pm. Since Recycle Rewards launched on 1 May, over 12 million containers have been returned statewide, with Southern Tasmania contributing more than half.

This new facility strengthens local access to sustainable waste management, supports inclusive employment, and empowers communities to reduce landfill and litter.
