Local government welcomes the release of the Government’s response to the Future of Local Government Review

Published 28th November 2024

Yesterday LGAT President and Break O'Day Council Mayor Mick Tucker joined the Minister for Local Government Kerry Vincent for the release of the Government’s response to the Future of Local Government Review.

Since 2022, the State Government and the Local Government Board have been undertaking a review of the role, function and design of local government in Tasmania. Throughout this process, LGAT has been engaging with councils to understand what is being delivered well, the challenges being faced and what opportunities exist to further enhance the value that councils provide to their communities. Based on this engagement, we provided the State Government with detailed feedback during the three stages of the review.

In October 2023, the Board submitted its Final Report which included 37 recommendations for reform. The State Government has now confirmed its support – either in full, in part, or in principle – for 36 of the recommendations.

As a first step, the State Government has prepared the Local Government Priority Reform Program 2024-26 which outlines the recommendations of the Review and will be delivered over the next two years.

We look forward to working closely with the Minister to ensure the reforms are implemented in a timely and effective way.
