LGAT submits feedback on Local Government Review
The Future of Local Government Review is now reaching the end of Stage 2, which involved the engagement of numerous key stakeholders to analyse the options presented in the Stage 2 Options Paper released in mid-December 2022.
In consultation with our General Management Committee, we have now submitted our feedback to the Local Government Board for their consideration.
Councils are the closest level of government to our communities and have a greater understanding of their needs compared to state and federal governments. It is vital that the voices of local government are heard during this review process.
We believe that any reform options must meet the following criteria:
- Strengthen local government’s unique value proposition to Tasmanian communities.
- Resolve the sector’s vulnerabilities.
- Ensure better, more effective interface with, and understanding between, the Tasmanian Government and local government.
Supportive leadership is required from the State Government to make this work.
One size will not fit all regarding any reform approach, as there are varied social, economic and environmental challenges across the state. Understanding and appreciating this will be the key to success.
