LGAT Submission – Draft Tasmanian Planning Policies

Published 9th February 2023
After significant consultation with our members, we submitted our response to the Draft Tasmanian Planning Policies in December 2022.

Through online workshops, direct engagement and written submissions from the majority of councils, the feedback we received helped shape our recommendations.

While progress on the strategic elements of Tasmania’s planning system was welcomed, there was still a concern about the serious lack of any meaningful two-way engagement with the sector during policy development.

Key recommendations we put forward were to:

  • Focus the policies on their fundamental development regulation role.
  • Remove over-prescriptive elements of the draft policies.
  • Further develop the implementation guidelines, but separate from the policies.
  • Support constructive, balanced decision-making to avoid derailing plan development.
  • Grow a development narrative for Tasmania.
  • Improve support for best practice infrastructure contribution systems.
  • Promote early, proponent-led consultation.
  • Support the local place-making role of councils with consistent statewide tools instead of a uniform application of mandates.

The Tasmanian Government has responded swiftly to LGAT’s advocacy by improving its level of consultation with councils and initiating more engagement opportunities, which is great to see.
