Greater Hobart Mayors welcome Derwent Ferry funding

The Greater Hobart Mayors have welcomed the Australian Government’s $20 million commitment to the expansion of the Derwent Ferry Service.

Mayor Brendan Blomeley (Clarence), Mayor Bec Thomas (Glenorchy), Acting Lord Mayor Helen Burnet (Hobart) and Acting Mayor Clare Glade-Wright (Kingborough) said it was pleasing to formally secure the funding, first pledged by Labor in the lead up to the Federal Election earlier this year.

The investment will expand Hobart’s commuter ferry service by constructing on-water terminals atnew locations on the River Derwent. Preliminary work is underway to inform the selection of terminal sites, with several locations under consideration including Sandy Bay, Lindisfarne and Wilkinsons Point, in addition to upgrades at Bellerive Pier.

The $20 million federal commitment builds on the Tasmanian Government’s $19 million investment in the Derwent Ferry service in the 2022-23 State Budget, which supports an ongoing service between Bellerive and the Hobart CBD, including improvements to landside infrastructure at Bellerive.
