Devonport City Council - Providing for an Inclusive and Active Community

Now a reality thanks to community members and organisations who approached the Devonport City Council – the recently opened all-abilities playground at the Devonport Bluff is the first one of its kind in the municipality and will provide for a more inclusive and active community.

After a series of organisations and community groups approached the council requesting the installation for all-abilities play equipment and playground, the Bluff was decided as best placed for the inclusive playground through an assessment owing to its high utilisation and its existing accessible infrastructure.

The council engaged broadly with disability stakeholders including the Association of Children with Disability (Tas), Devonfield Enterprises, and the School of Special Education North-West. Based upon this engagement process, the equipment and design were determined with an all-inclusive carousel, tipi spinner with top brace, and a hill slide with slide and tunnel.

Mayor Rockliff said, “The Bluff playground has always been a popular spot for families to come together and the addition of inclusive play equipment will only enhance that experience.” Furthermore, Mayor Rockliff said that the equipment will provide opportunities for children with and without disabilities to play, grow, and learn together. “The inclusive playground will provide a richer environment for children in the Mersey region, plus visitors to the coast, and offer a space that allows more people to actively participate and engage in the community.

The project was funded through the contributions and collaboration from the Tasmanian Community Fund with additional donations and support from the Devonport Rotary Club, and the Rotaract Club of Central Coast. In supporting the project, the Devonport City Council contributed half of the funding for the playground.
