2009 Census

This is the third survey of elected members in Tasmania.  The 2009 survey attracted a 58 per cent response rate. 

As with 2006, the census collected information on a range of areas including information on gender, age, background, education and occupation. The survey follows a similar format to previous years with some additional questions around  knowledge, training, communication, skills and needs; which will be used to inform the Governance Working Group under the Premier's Local Government Council's Stronger Councils, Better Services project. 

The 2009 census also aimed to capture an insight into elected member opinion asking which matters are currently most important to Local Government in Tasmania.

Respondents rated planning and development, rates and roads as the issues considered to be of most concern to the public.  These issues, after financial sustainability, were of most importance to them as well. 

Over 60% of respondents have undertaken some training related to being elected to council but a significant proportion experience some difficulties in undertaking training.

Only 12% of respondents were newly elected in 2007.  More than 30% of respondents had served on council for 10 or more years.
