Stand for council - How to nominate

How to nominate? Dr Katrena Stephenson CEO Local Government Association Tasmania offers advice.

To run for council election, you must nominate using the required process. Go to the Tasmanian Electoral Commission (TEC) website Local Government section and read the 2018 Local Government Candidate Handbook.

**please note recent changes to the Local Government (General) Regulations 2015 regarding major changes to expenditure limits and the electoral advertising return - see TEC Website **

The TEC produces a range of resources to help candidates in the 2018 Local Government elections, and places them on the Local Government Elections page.

TEC can help and can advise you on all aspects of the election process.

The most important dates to note are:

  • 10 September 2018: Nominations Open
  • 24 September 2018: Nominations Close
  • 30 October 2018: Polling Closes

Specifically, it is important to complete your nomination form in the required way

  • Obtain a nomination form from the TEC website
  • Get it signed by at least 2 people with the right to vote in your council area.
  • Sign it yourself
  • Lodge, post, email or fax the TEC’s Returning Officer, OR the Electoral Officer at the relevant council and make sure it arrives before NOON on 24th September 2018.
