2015 Census

LGAT is encouraging all Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Alderman and Councillors to participate in the 5th LGAT Elected Member Census.

LGAT has coordinated a census of Tasmanian Local Government elected members in 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2011 with good return rates of over 60 per cent. This census we are aiming for a much higher percentage return and have made the questionnaire both simpler and electronic to boost return rates.

The results provide the Association with information on a broad range of matters relating to Tasmanian elected members and our sector. It is necessary to regularly update this data to inform LGAT policy and program development and training opportunities, and to maintain a current understanding of the profile of elected members.

The Association will compile a report highlighting the major findings of the 2015 census which will be available to members on the LGAT website.

Please note that the census is anonymous. No individual elected member or council will be able to be identified during the data collection, analysis or reporting process. If you do not feel comfortable responding to all the questions, it would be appreciated if you could provide some basic data by completing those questions relating to gender, age and ethnicity. This will enable LGAT to gauge the degree to which the sample is representative of the whole population of elected members in Tasmania.

It is estimated that the census will take approximately ten minutes to complete and it would be appreciated if you could complete by the end of February.  If you have any enquiries please contact Dr Katrena Stephenson (Policy Director) on 6233 5973. Your participation is fundamental to the success of the census process.

Following the October 2011 council elections, LGAT invited all elected members to participate in the Elected Member Census. This survey is conducted bienially and provides a demographic snapshot as well as some insight into issues of importance and training needs. This is the fourth survey LGAT has conducted.
